This whipped feta dip combines the salty tang of feta cheese with the deep, sweet flavor of slowly caramelized onions. It’s a rich and creamy spread that feels special but is very simple to make.

With just a handful of ingredients and about 35 minutes, you can have this appetizer ready for guests. It’s a wonderful addition to any party menu or cheese board, and it comes together quickly using a food processor.

Why You’ll Love Caramelized Onion Whipped Feta Dip

  • Caramelizing onions over low heat transforms their sharp taste into a rich sweetness that provides a delicious flavor base for the dip.
  • Using a food processor is the secret to achieving a light, airy, and smooth texture that makes the feta dip so pleasant.
  • A small amount of honey is added to balance the saltiness from the feta, creating a more rounded and satisfying taste.

Caramelized Onion Whipped Feta Dip Ingredients

  • Feta Cheese: A block of feta in brine will yield a creamier, more flavorful dip than dry, pre-crumbled varieties.
  • Onion: A yellow onion is a great choice for caramelizing because its natural sugar content results in a sweet, jammy flavor.
  • Heavy Cream: This ingredient gives the dip its rich, smooth consistency. For a slightly less rich version, you could substitute with half-and-half.
  • Olive Oil: Use a good quality extra virgin olive oil, as its flavor will be noticeable in the finished dip.
  • Honey: Just a touch balances the feta’s saltiness. Maple syrup is a good alternative if you prefer.

Exact quantities are in the recipe card below.

How to Make Caramelized Onion Whipped Feta Dip

Step 1: Caramelize the Onions

First, slowly cook the sliced onions in butter over low-medium heat. Stir them every few minutes until they are soft, sweet, and a deep golden brown color. This process takes time but builds a huge amount of flavor.

Step 2: Whip the Feta Base

While the onions cool down, place the feta, heavy cream, olive oil, honey, and pepper in a food processor. Blend the ingredients until the mixture is completely smooth and has a light, whipped consistency.

Step 3: Combine and Serve

Add most of the cooled caramelized onions to the whipped feta, reserving a small amount for the top. Blend briefly to combine everything. Spoon the dip into a bowl, garnish with the remaining onions and a drizzle of olive oil.

Storage Tips for Caramelized Onion Whipped Feta Dip

Store the dip in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. The dip will firm up when chilled; let it sit at room temperature for 15-20 minutes and give it a stir before serving. Freezing is not recommended.

Expert Tips for Caramelized Onion Whipped Feta Dip

  • For the creamiest texture, use a block of feta packed in brine rather than pre-crumbled feta.
  • Patience is key for caramelizing onions. Keep the heat low to prevent them from burning before they become sweet.
  • The dip can be served immediately while slightly warm, or chilled for 30 minutes for a firmer consistency.
  • If the dip seems too thick, you can add another tablespoon of heavy cream or olive oil and blend again.

What to Serve with Caramelized Onion Whipped Feta Dip?

Serve with warm pita bread, crunchy crostini, or a selection of fresh vegetables like cucumber slices, carrot sticks, and bell pepper strips.

Caramelized Onion Whipped Feta Dip Recipe FAQs

Can I make this dip ahead of time?

Yes, you can prepare it up to 2 days in advance. Store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Let it come to room temperature for about 20 minutes before serving for the best texture.

My dip isn’t getting smooth. What did I do wrong?

For the smoothest dip, make sure to use a block of feta instead of crumbles, and blend for at least 1-2 minutes. If it’s still too thick, add a little more heavy cream or olive oil to help it blend.

What else can I add to this dip?

You can add fresh herbs like thyme or rosemary to the onions as they caramelize. A pinch of red pepper flakes can also be added to the food processor for a little bit of heat.

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter 14 g
  • 1 medium yellow onion thinly sliced
  • 8 oz block feta cheese crumbled, 225 g
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream 120 ml
  • 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil plus more for drizzling, 60 ml
  • 1 tbsp honey 15 ml
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper freshly ground

Instructions

  • Melt the butter in a medium skillet over low-medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, for 20 to 25 minutes. The onions should be deeply golden, soft, and sweet.
  • Once caramelized, remove the skillet from the heat and set aside to cool for a few minutes.
  • While the onions cool, add the crumbled feta, heavy cream, olive oil, honey, and black pepper to the bowl of a food processor.
  • Pulse the mixture a few times to break down the feta, then process for 1 to 2 minutes until it becomes smooth and creamy.
  • Reserve about two tablespoons of the caramelized onions for garnish. Add the rest of the onions to the food processor.
  • Blend again for about 30 seconds, or until the onions are well incorporated into the feta mixture.
  • Transfer the whipped feta dip to a serving bowl. Create a swirl on top with the back of a spoon.
  • Garnish with the reserved caramelized onions and a final drizzle of extra virgin olive oil before serving.
