  • 1 tsp Lemon Zest Use a microplane for finely grating.
  • 2 tbsp Capers Minced green olives can be a milder substitute.
  • 1 tbsp Fresh Dill Can swap with chives or parsley.

For the Sandwiches

  • 12 slices Pumpernickel or Rye Bread Whole grain or gluten-free varieties work too.
  • 8 oz Smoked Salmon Opt for wild-caught salmon or replace with cucumbers for vegetarian.

Preparation Steps

  • Combine the softened cream cheese and mayonnaise in a mixing bowl. Stir until smooth and creamy.
  • Mix in the freshly squeezed lemon juice, lemon zest, capers, fresh dill, black pepper, and salt. Stir until well blended.
  • Spread about 1 tablespoon of the cream cheese mixture on each slice of bread.
  • Layer two slices of smoked salmon on one piece of the spread-covered bread.
  • Close the sandwich with the other slice of bread and press gently to secure the layers.
  • Trim the crusts off the sandwiches, then cut them into desired shapes.
  • Optionally, garnish with extra dill on top.

Notes
