  • 1 cup kunafa noodles
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (divided)
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup chopped pistachios (for garnish)
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a baking dish.
  2. Break kunafa noodles into small pieces and mix with melted butter until coated.
  3. Spread half of the buttered kunafa in the baking dish and bake for about 15 minutes until golden brown.
  4. In a saucepan over medium heat, combine milk, half of the sugar, cornstarch, and vanilla extract; stir continuously until thickened.
  5. Once thickened, remove from heat and let cool slightly before spreading over the baked kunafa layer.
  6. Top with remaining kunafa noodles and bake for another 10 minutes until golden.
  7. In a separate saucepan, combine water, remaining sugar, and lemon juice; simmer until thickened into syrup.
  8. Drizzle syrup over baked kunafa cream puffs and serve warm or at room temperature.
