  • 1/2 cup fine-ground cornmeal
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 8 hot dogs (beef, pork, or turkey)
  • Wooden skewers
  • Oil for frying (enough for submerging)

Instructions

  1. Gather all ingredients and heat oil in a deep pot to about 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, cornmeal, baking powder, sugar, and salt until combined.
  3. In another bowl, beat the egg with the milk until smooth. Gradually add to the dry ingredients while stirring until just mixed.
  4. Skewer each hot dog with a wooden stick, leaving half exposed.
  5. Dip each hot dog into the batter until fully coated. Carefully place them in the hot oil one at a time; fry until golden brown (about 3 minutes), turning as necessary.
  6. Remove corn dogs from oil and drain on paper towels. Serve hot with your choice of dipping sauces.
